I got my start building websites back in 2008 when I was a portrait artist and wanted to (of course) make changes on my site fairly regularly. This was getting hard on my bank account and cumbersome to my web developer so he encouraged me to buy Dreamweaver and just build my own. “It’s not that hard, you can figure it out,” he said.
Thanks to great support along the way (and a lot of time on Lynda.com), I did figure it out and learned how to code in HTML and CSS. Before long, I was building sites for other people and loving it.
After two years, most of my clients were asking for websites that would allow them to easily manage their own content, just as I had wanted in the beginning. I realized it was time to move to a platform that would make this possible. That, of course, was WordPress and I have spent the last 6+ years fine-tuning my WP know-how.
There are thousands of WP themes and just as many ways to configure a WP website but I specialize in building WP sites that also include the Genesis Framework from StudioPress. Their code is clean and lean – and they are dedicated to making sure each theme is well-built. Search rank can be affected by a slow-loading, clunky site and this has never been a problem with StudioPress products.
A well-built site must also include a keyword strategy and I keep my search engine optimization wits about me by reading blogs, attending conferences, and participating in the monthly events by Portland’s excellent local search marketing organization SEMPDX. Search has radically changed since I first started doing keyword research and it takes dedication and focus to stay current. As fellow developer MaAnna Stephenson so eloquently put it “Google likes to move the cheese…”

HoW CAD Drafting Services testimonial
I took an incredible step last winter and started my own drafting business. I have years of experience in architectural drafting but I was clueless on website – anything. I was referred to Mary Ellen from a friend and the next couple of months were an education and a delight. Mary Ellen explained everything in steps. She saw and understood my frustration and took each process to creating my website piece by piece. She gave me “to do lists” so my personal involvement and thoughts for my site were an important role. As I fed her pictures, testimonials, content and ideas she manipulated it all into a wonderful website. When we went live it was a pretty cool feeling that it looked so well laid out, and was so easy to read and maneuver around. There were nothing but compliments from friends that visited the site. She finished up with a “how to” lesson on editing the site myself. Although she did assure me I could call her anytime for help. Mary Ellen was very helpful, friendly and quite sympathetic to us website uneducated folk. I will gladly refer Mary Ellen on to anyone in need of a website; she is well worth it.
