Artist Biography Back to Home

Irwin Lachman is retired and lives in Sonoma County California, devoting a lot more of his time
to art now than previously.  He lived in the Bay Area many years ago and took painting classes
at the San Francisco Art Institute and since then has always been studying and working.  His
work has been shown in upstate New York and in galleries in New York and New Jersey. Since
moving to Sonoma County his pictures have been exhibited at local galleries and shows at the
Sebastopol Center for the Arts, Oakmont Gallery, Sonoma County Fair, Marin County Fair,
Harvest Fair, Sonoma-Marin Fair, CA State Fair, Cultural Arts Council of Sonoma County,
Kokopelli Gallery, Hop Kiln Winery, Taft Street Winery, Nat’l Bank of the Redwoods,
Sebastopol Library and the Santa Rosa Steele Lane Community Center.

In the past few years the focus of his work has been on monoprints.  This technique lends
itself to spontaneity and freshness and combines beautifully with other media, such as ink and
watercolor, making possible many variations.  In addition to monoprints, this web site also
displays his watercolors and digitalized variations of  monoprints and watercolors.

The works contain some recognizable subject matter, but the compostions are also abstract enough to
create mystery and complexity and yet still be pleasing to the beholder.  Color is very important
in this regard and Lachman enjoys creating and playing with harmonies and contrasts.  His subjects
include landscapes based on the western US, explorations of birds, marine themes, and other natural
objects, as well as purely abstract compositions. Much of this work derives from his life in
California and time previously spent in New Mexico. Enjoy the work!
